A wind advisory remains posted for the Big Island’s Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits until 6 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
The service forecast west winds of 30 mph to 45 mph with gusts reaching 60 mph.
A wind advisory is issued when sustained winds of at least 30 mph or gusts of at least 50 mph are expected. The service cautioned that winds this strong can make driving in the area difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
The Mauna Kea access road is open Monday morning, however, one-way traffic has been implemented in some areas at the summit. Click here for more details.
At 7:10 a.m., the temperature at the summit of Mauna Kea was 32 degrees, according to the center. Including the wind chill factor, a calculated value depicting the perceived “feel-like” temperature, the temperature was 15.3 degrees. Winds were blowing out of the northwest around 43 mph.
