Waiakea took the first set of Friday’s volleyball match at Kealakehe but the Waveriders answered back by sweeping the next three sets for the victory over last year’s BIIF Division I runner-up. Kealakehe won, 20-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-23.
“We showed a lot of heart and we toughed it out,” said Waveriders coach Kahinu Lee. “We made a lot of mistakes but it is something we can work out. We stuck together and played as a team and that is what gave us the win.”
Kealakehe was led to victory by their front line, which included the blocking duo of Peni Kalavi and Kanoa Snively. They were nearly impenetrable in the second, third and fourth set which helped turn the tide in Kealakehe’s favor.
Seth Lincoln and Brandon Leialoha led the Waveriders in kills.
Kealakehe will play at home Saturday against CLA. The match starts at 10 a.m.
