A wind advisory has been extended for the Big Island’s Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits until 6 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
The service forecast west winds of 30 mph to 60 mph. The forecasters said that winds may increase on Saturday prompting a high wind watch or warning to be issued.
A wind advisory is issued when sustained winds of at least 30 mph or gusts of at least 50 mph are expected. The service cautioned that winds this strong can make driving in the area difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
The Mauna Kea access road was closed because of the winds as of 2:20 p.m. Friday, according to the Mauna Kea Weather Center.
