A flash flood watch has been issued for the Big Island, according to the National Weather Service. It remains in effect for the entire Big Island until 6 a.m. Thursday.
Heavy rain is forecast to fall over the Big Island through Thursday morning bringing the threat of flash flooding, the service said. The highest threat will be along the windward sides of the island. Excessive runoff may result in rock and mudslides in areas of steep terrain.
A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. It does not have to be raining heavily where you are for flash flooding to occur. The public is advised to avoid camping or hiking near streams and low-lying areas.
