Presentation on ocean garbage plastic given in Honokaa
Environmental activist Charles Moore will present footage and findings from his 2014 research voyage on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch at 7 p.m. Saturday at Honokaa People’s Theatre.
Joining him for a talk-story session will be Rick Anthony, a key figure in the international Zero Waste Movement.
The program will also include a screening of “Plastic Paradise,” an award-winning 2013 documentary by Angela Sun that delves into plastic pollution on Midway Island and beyond.
Moore is known for his ground-breaking studies of the garbage patch. In the summer of 2014, he led his 10th expedition into the mid-ocean gyre where plastic debris collects. They found pollution had worsened since the last voyage in 2009, partly because of the Japanese tsunami.
Moore’s team hopes to determine whether toxic chemicals are being transferred into the food chain from plastic debris.
Moore is founder of the Algalita Marine Research and Education Foundation, which gathers and disseminates information about plastic pollution, emphasizing programs for youth. Visit algalita.org for more information.
