Senior Roundtable Hui gathers Tuesday

The Senior Roundtable Hui will discuss family communication and aging from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Pink Mocha Cafe just above Home Depot. The format will be interactive and all age groups are invited.

The hui is a gathering of seniors, family members, those in the aging industry and anyone interested in aging issues, which meets on the first Tuesday of each month. There is no charge for the meeting. Parking offers easy access.

Suicide prevention task force meets

The Kona Suicide Prevention Task Force will meet from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday in the West Hawaii Community Health Center conference room, 75-5751 Kuakini Highway. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Free Masons meet Wednesday

The Kona Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons will meet Wednesday at the Kona Masonic Center, 73-5577 Kauhola St., Suite 7 in Kailua-Kona. Activities will begin at 6 p.m and the meeting will be at 7.

VA hosts Kona veterans town hall

In an effort to enhance its transparency and meet the needs of the community, the Department of Veterans Affairs Pacific Islands Health Care System will host a town hall event open to all Kona veterans, family members and community partners from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Kona VFW Post 12122, 74-5543 Kaiwi St., Suite 185A, Kailua-Kona.

Local VA leadership will be available for a question-and-answer session to hear the concerns of area veterans. Additional representatives will be on hand to discuss VA and veteran programs and initiatives, such as health care enrollment, claims/compensation benefits, education/training programs, vocational rehabilitation benefits, and additional assistance.

Free Zumba classes offered in Captain Cook

The Hawaii County Parks and Recreation Department is holding free Zumba classes from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at Yano Hall in Captain Cook. Classes begin Thursday and run through April 30.

Waimea Community Association meeting planned

A Waimea Community Association will inlcude a talk-story with Mayor Billy Kenoi from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Waimea School cafeteria.

Topics will include Waimea District Park, waste disposal strategies, Keauhou Aquifer concerns, Kona International Airport expansion and traffic.

An update on Waimea having been designated a Blue Zone is also on the agenda. The meeting also will include comments from newly appointed West Hawaii University of Hawaii regent Pete Hoffmann.

Attendees are encouraged to contribute to the Waimea food pantry with cash, check or a food donation.

Gala to raise funds for Parker School financial aid

Parker School will host Kahiau, its 10th annual auction gala, Saturday at the Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii. All proceeds will go toward financial aid at the school.

Dinner, a silent auction and a live auction will be featured. Available items include an authentic Niihau shell lei, a Las Vegas travel package, activities, hotel stays and artwork.

Nearly 50 percent of Parker students receive financial aid, and Kahiau, the school’s largest fundraiser of the year, is key in making this possible. Tickets to the adults-only gala are $175. Free Polynesian luau show planned in Captain Cook

Hoopomaikai, a nonprofit community health movement based on the Blue Zones Project, will hold a free luau show with a Samoan fire knife dance from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Kealalekua Ranch Center in Captain Cook.

A healthy Hawaiian dinner will be served for $25 and includes reserved luau show seating.

Ronald McDonald presents children’s reading time

“It’s Book Time with Ronald McDonald!” will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.

The program motivates students to read more often by making reading fun through the use of music, magic, puppets, storytelling and reading with Ronald McDonald the clown. The program is free and intended for children ages 5 to 10.
