Big Island police arrest 24 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant Dec. 15 through Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant Dec. 15 through Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

South Hilo and Kona districts police arrested eight individuals each and Puna and South Kohala officers, four motorists each, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

So far this year, there have been 1,127 DUI arrests compared with 1,303 during the same period last year. There have been 1,491 major accidents in 2014 compared with 1,298 during the same period in 2013.

So far this year, there were 11 traffic fatalities on Big Island pubic roadways compared with 25 fatalities during the same period last year.

To date, three fatalities were related to drugs only and three fatalities were related to a combination of alcohol and drugs. DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
