Feed the Children Kona put on a free Christmas dinner for the needy in Kealakekua on Saturday. Featuring fresh vegetables from local donors and other food, the event at Christ Church Episcopal also had silk painting, live music, Santa and gifts, all designed to bring creative and nutritional sustenance to children going through hard times, said the event’s organizer Marya Mann.
“One in every five children on our island are hungry, and go to bed at night not knowing how they are going to eat the next day,” Mann said. “We really need to deal with this.”
Attendees at the dinner added silk paint touches to good luck banners and were given “blessing bags” containing five additional meals to take home. The grassroots event, now in its second year, was aided by 30 volunteers.
