Chaves named Officer of the Month
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor Officer Dustin Chaves as “Officer of the Month” at noon Wednesday, Jan. 7 for his outstanding performance as a member of the Hawaii Police Department. The guest speaker will be En Young, Food Bank director.
The public is invited to attend the Officer of the Month luncheons normally held on the first Wednesday of each month.
The luncheon is $20 all inclusive at the Huggo’s Restaurant. Reservations are required and may be made by contacting Liz Holey at lholey@hawaii.rr.com or 443-7708 by Monday, Jan. 5.
App enhances tours at Amy Greenwell Garden
The Amy Greenwell Garden in Captain Cook now has an audio tour that visitors can access through their smart phone or tablet. Nine different artists, farmers, and conservation professionals contributed their wisdom and expertise to record the tour.
To access the tour, download the free app, izi.travel from the App Store, Google play, or the Windows Phone Store. Then use “Explore” to find Amy Greenwell Garden.
Personally guided tours of the garden are available every day at 1 p.m. The garden is closed Mondays. The audio tour is available any time from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service should contact Peter Van Dyke at 323-3318 at least two weeks before their planned visit.
Fireworks permits available soon
According to the Hawaii Fire Department, fireworks permits can be purchased beginning Friday at several West Hawaii locations. They will be sold from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 30 and 31 at the Kona Fire Prevention Office at West Hawaii Civic Center. In Waimea, they will be available from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31 in the Parker Ranch Shopping Center Food Court.
Fireworks permits will also be sold at firecracker vending outlets including in the Kona Crossroads Parking Lot, 75-1027 Henry St., at Pacific Fireworks Kona, 75-5629 Kuakini Highway and at KTA Kona in Kona Coast Shopping Center.
County offers information for Christmas tree disposal
From Dec. 26 through Jan. 17, Christmas trees may be left in designated areas at county transfer stations to be recycled and should not be discarded in trash chutes. Transfer stations in Milolii and Ocean View will not offer Christmas tree recycling.
Trees to be recycled should be free from all decorations, stands, lights, tinsel and ornaments. Any flocked trees, artificial trees or trees with tinsel are not recyclable and may be disposed of in the regular trash chutes.
Kadomatsu decorations which are normally a combination of bamboo, pine and flowers may also be recycled.
