Preliminary design concepts for judiciary complex revealed Tuesday

The Hawaii State Judiciary invites the public to see an informational display of preliminary design concepts for the proposed Kona Judiciary Complex from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building G. While no formal program is planned, officials from the Hawaii State Judiciary, Department of Accounting and General Services and Architects Hawaii will be available and will welcome any questions, comments or input.

Plans call for building the new courthouse on a 10-acre parcel mauka of Queen Kaahumanu Highway across Makala Boulevard from Makalapua Center. The complex will be three stories high and cost $90 million to construct.

December Rotary Means Business — Big Island meets

Big Island Rotarians and guests will meet from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday for “Rotary Means Business — Big Island” upstairs at Humpy’s Showroom in Kailua-Kona. Attendees should wear festive holiday garb.

Rotary Means Business — Big Island is held on the third Thursday each month for all Hawaii Island Rotarians and guests to network and share about their clubs and businesses. Club announcement fliers, company brochures and business cards are encouraged.

Niihau shell workshops at Lyman Museum

Kele Kanahele, master shell lei maker from Niihau, returns to Hilo’s Lyman Museum to teach this art from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Dec. 20. Kanahele will teach participants how to create beautiful necklaces (lei) and earrings in the pikake style using momi lenalena shells. On either day particpiants may learn how to make an 18-inch necklace ($205 for museum members, $215 nonmembers), a 22-inch necklace ($250 members, $260 nonmembers), or a pair of earrings ($65 members, $75 nonmembers) — or more than one piece, as long as sign up is for specific pieces in advance.

Space is limited to 24 persons per day; only people who have registered will be permitted in the classroom. Reservations must be made, pieces specified, and the workshop fee paid by Monday.
