The cause of a Wednesday morning fire that damaged the Waiakea Uka Gym in Hilo in under investigation.
Respondng to the 4:29 a.m. report, firefighters found the northwest corner of the Ainaola Drive gym on fire with flames extending to the rafters, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department. The fire consumed about 30 percent of the gym’s roof.
Ainaola Drive was closed while firefighters battled the blaze. The fire was declared under control at 4:45 a.m. and out at 4:55 a.m., according to the department.
The department estimated damage to the 7,200-square-foot building at $65,000.
Detectives with the Hawaii Police Department and officials with the fire department are also investigating the blaze.
