During the nine weeks of training, Ching studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills.
Ah Ching is the sister of Aileen Crichton of Hilo.
Mama’s House receives donation from farmers market
Vendors of Waimea Midweek Farmers Market donated $660 to Mama’s House. A $1 donation was made for each hat either worn at the market or posted on Waimea Midweek Farmers Market social media site.

Traffic Safety Committee to meet
The Kona Traffic Safety Committee will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11. The committee creates an opportunity for concerned members of the community to meet with county and state officials who can help mitigate traffic safety problems. Everyone will be heard. New ideas are welcome.
The committee meets the second Thursday of each month in the Community Hale, Building G of West Hawaii Civic Center.
Korean War veterans association meeting set
A meeting of the Korean War Veterans Association of West Hawaii Chapter 279 will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at The VFW meeting hall, 74-5543 Kaiwi St., Suite 185a, at the corner of Kaiwi Street and Pawai Place, behind Kona Locksmith.
Membership is open to any person who has seen honorable service in any of the Armed Forces of the United States, defined as Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard if service was within Korea including territorial waters and airspace at any time Sept. 3, 1945, to the present, or service was outside of Korea between June 25, 1950, and Jan. 31, 1955. Associate members are also welcome.

Santa to appear
at Lanihau Center craft fair
Santa will be at Lanihau Center from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Bring a camera to take a picture with him or visit the photo booth for a free picture. Arts and crafts are also free and goodie bags will be given away by Santa while supplies last. Lori Lei Hula Studio and Kahakai Ukulele Ensemble will provide entertainment and KWXX will hold a treasure chest giveaway at 3 p.m. followed by a drawing to win Santa’s stocking filled with gifts valued at $300.

Feast on the Beach to raise funds
for Kona hospital
The second annual Feast on the Beach fundraiser for the Kona Hospital Foundation is slated from 6 to 10 p.m. Dec. 12 at Lava Lava Beach Club at Anaehoomalu Bay. The event features food, wine and beer stations and music by LT Smooth and Henry Kapono. Tickets are $100 per person, tables of eight are $1,000 and on sale now. The Kona Hospital Foundation will receive 50 percent of ticket sales.

Sound healers give presentation at Dragonfly Ranch
Sound healers Patricia Athena and her daughter, Jenn Le Fait, of Australia, will give a presentation about collecting instruments in Bali and Singapore and performing healing ceremonies at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Dragonfly Ranch in Honaunau. The ceremony will be streamed live on the Internet. They will also conduct a workshop on sacred sound from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday. There is no charge, but donations are accepted.

Tree giveaway planned in Hilo
Hawaii Electric Light Co. will hold a tree giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday or while supplies last at its Hilo office.
Trees to be given away include ohia, koa, puhala, lama, niu, kou and kukui.
The annual event is a partnership with Kua O Ka La Public Charter School, Hooulu Lahui, Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program and HELCO. Kua O Ka La students care for the trees and compile a newsletter to distribute with the trees.
