The Rainbow Wahine couldn’t, and as a result their season is finished.
Vansant smacked 22 kills Saturday night as the third-ranked Huskies ousted Hawaii in four sets in an NCAA tournament second-round game, winning 25-20, 19-25, 25-16, 25-14 in Seattle.
Nikki Taylor led the Wahine (22-7) with 15 kills, but she made 10 errors as UH hit just .088. Kalei Adolpho recorded 10 kills on .562 hitting, while Kalei Greeley’s match typified the night for Hawaii: 10 kills, eight attack errors.
While Vansant, the AVCA national player of the year last season as a junior, carried her team, Kaleigh Nelson added nine kills and Tia Scambray contributed eight kills and 18 digs.
Washington held a 15.5-6 blocking edge.
UH-Hilo loses in OT
Luke Hager scored 24 points with eight rebounds and Hawaii Pacific made all six of its free throws in overtime to push past the University of Hawaii at Hilo 70-65 in Honolulu.
Darnell Williams led the Vulcans (4-4, 0-2 Pacific West Conference) with 15 points and Tre Johnson added 13.
After getting a tying free throw from Darius Johnson-Wilson with 31 seconds left in regulation, UH-Hilo held for the last shot but Vandyon Lockett missed a layup near the buzzer.
A tip-in by Darry Jones Jr. on the first possession of overtime gave Hawaii Pacific (4-2, 1-1) the lead for good. Jones Jr. finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Hawaii Pacific women 99, UH-Hilo 65: Kylie Huerta scored 24 points, and Morganne Comstock finished with 22 points and 16 rebounds, and Hawaii Pacific began to pull away late in the first half to win a rout.
Hayley Reynolds and Alexa Jacobs each scored 10 points for the Vulcans (2-4, 1-1 PacWest).
Hawaii Pacific (6-1, 2-0) shot 50.8 percent from the floor, including 10 of 19 on 3-pointers.
BYU tops UH
Tyler Haws scored 30 points and Kyle Collinsworth had 19 points, 12 rebuonds and 10 assists as BYU pulled away from Hawaii 90-70 in Salt Lake City
It was the first triple-double at BYU (7-2) since 1988.
Aaron Valdes had 14 points for the Rainbow Warriors (7-3) with Roderick Bobbitt adding 15.
Pacific women 69, Hawaii 61: Kendall Kenyon and Haile Eackles each scored 13 points, and Pacific shot 60.9 percent in the second half to win in Honolulu.
Shawna-Lei Kuehu paced the Rainbow Wahine (4-4).
Pacific (5-2) trailed 31-29 at halftime, but it used a 11-1 run early in the second half to take control.
