FRESNO, Calif. — Hawaii’s play-by-play announcer has apologized to Fresno State for describing the Central California city as “the armpit of America.”
The Fresno Bee says Robert Kekaula made the remark at the end of Saturday night’s broadcast of a Hawaii football game that Fresno State won 28-21.
Fresno State Associate Athletic Director Paul Ladwig says Fresno State got a letter Tuesday from Kekaula apologizing to the college president, football coach and fans and to the people of Fresno.
In the letter, Kekaula said he was joking with a statistician when he remarked: “Good night from the armpit of America,” and then realized the comment had gone out over the air.
Ladwig says the apology was accepted.
