WAILUKU — Maui Fire Department and Coast Guard crews suspended a search for four swimmers reported to be in distress off Maui after determining no one was reported missing.

Maui Fire spokesman Lee Mainaga said Monday a caller reported seeing four swimmers about 500 yards from shore off Olowalu in west Maui.

The fire department sent boats and a helicopter to the scene Sunday afternoon. The Coast Guard diverted a helicopter from a case on the Big Island and sent a boat from Honolulu. Crews looked for the swimmers until 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Coast Guard says the search was suspended after officials talked to every person on a two-mile stretch of the beach. They determined no one was reported missing. All vehicles in the area were also accounted for.
