LIHUE — Kauai’s mayor is nominating the county attorney’s replacement to be a man who’s currently serving as a deputy county attorney.

Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. says he is asking the county council to confirm Mauna Kea Trask as the new county attorney. Trask is currently the first deputy county attorney.

County Attorney Al Castillo Jr. is returning to private practice.

Carvalho says he’s seen Trask grow as a leader. Castillo says Trask has led many recent accomplishments of the office.

Prior to joining the county attorney’s office in 2009, Trask worked in the Kauai prosecuting attorney’s office. He’s also been an Oahu public defender and a clerk for judges in the first and fifth circuit courts.

The newly elected council is expected to consider the nomination Dec. 1.
