A wind advisory has been posted for the Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa summits through 6 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
The service forecast west winds of 35 mph to 50 mph with gusts topping 60 mph, according to the service. An upper-level trough moving to the north of the islands and a cold front passing through the state is producing the gusty winds.
The service cautioned that winds this strong can make driving or hiking in the area dangerous. Hikers and campers in the area are advised to seek shelter.
The winds can also make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
