A rescue chopper lands Tuesday afternoon on a rock outcropping in the Wailuku River just makai of the Wainaku Street bridge. Hawaii County Fire Department responded shortly after 4:45 p.m. upon receiving a report that a man jumped into the water about 40 feet below the area of the bridge. The man was airlifted from the river in a stretcher suspended by rope from the helicopter and set down in a parking lot across Wailuku Drive. A waiting ambulance transported him to Hilo Medical Center. The man was in “satisfactory condition,” according to Hawaii Police Department Sgt. Darryel Tolentino.
