Echo City going for roller derby title
Kona-based Echo City Knockouts will participate in the “Battle of the Islands” in Hilo on Saturday.
The state tournament, which includes teams from Kauai and Maui, starts at 9 a.m. in Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Honokaa seeks baseball coach
Honokaa High is accepting applications for the boys varsity baseball head coach position.
Applications are available from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the main office, and can be submitted at the main office or the athletic director’s office in the gym. The deadline for applications is Friday.

Wobble Gobble run/walk and food drive
Big Island Running Company will host the 10th annual Walua Road “Wobble Gobble” fun run and walk at 8 a.m. Nov. 27.
The race starts at the Walua Road trailhead on Lako Street just mauka of the Chevron Gas station. Participants choose to run or walk courses of 1 mile, 3.5 miles or 6.4 miles.
The event is free, and participants are welcome to donate two cans of food to the Hawaii Food Bank. Volunteers and postrace refreshment donations are also welcome.

Kawaihae Canoe Club to hold 20th annual luau
The Kawaihae Canoe Club will hold its luau Nov. 22 at the Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor.

Keck Observatory to host polo match
The “Cosmic Cup” polo match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Nov. 23 at Mauna Kea Polo Club at Waikii Ranch.
Gates open at noon, the games start at 1 p.m., and the main event between Keck I and Keck II teams at 2.
General admission to this fundraiser is $5 per person. Fans may bring picnic lunch, umbrella and chairs.

Reuse a shoe program
Forever Fitness, Big Island Honda, Hawaii Preparatory Academy and Frozen Pea Productions are sponsoring the annual Reuse a Shoe giveaway from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Big Island Honda.
Forever Fitness is still accepting donations of shoes — both usable and unusable — clothing and other items. Unusable shoes will be sent to Nike for its Reuse a Shoe Program. Donations can also be brought the day of the event.

22nd annual Wahine Sailing Regatta
Kona Sailing Club will host the Wahine Weekend on Saturday-Sunday. Registration and sign-in will begin at 9 a.m.
Saturday’s clinic begins at 9:30 a.m. Sailing certified instructors will lead an on-land talk on topics including teamwork, race strategy and basic racing rules. An on-the-water clinic will follow and ends at 3 p.m. The cost is $10 for KSC members, $15 for nonmembers.
Sunday’s skipper/crew meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. The race start sequence will begin at 11:50 a.m. Wahine will sail two races. There will postrace pupu and an awards celebration. The cost is $15 for sailors, $10 for sailors under 21 or meal only.
Wahine skippers with boats, or crew looking for a boat, are welcome. Borrowed boats may be provided. Space is limited, reservations end Wednesday.

Konawaena hosts golf benefit
Konawaena is holding its inaugural Wildcat Golf Challenge on Monday at Hokulia.
The $250 fee per golfer includes cart, continental breakfast and lunch.
Registration begins at 8 a.m., with shotgun start at 10. The format is two best balls of four.
Proceeds support the school’s athletic programs.

Paddle race during Thanksgiving holiday
The Beanie Heen Thanksgiving paddle race will be held Nov. 29 from Anaehoomalu Bay to Kawaihae Surf Park.
Relays are welcome, with the exchange at Puako, for the race of about 10 miles. There will be SUP, OC-1, OC-2 and relay divisions.
There will be a postrace party with awards and raffle.

Benefit tourney for school golf teams
The Friends of West Hawaii High School Golf Teams will hold its second annual benefit tournament at 8 a.m. Dec. 7 at Makalei Golf Club.
Proceeds benefit Kealakehe, Konawaena and Makua Lani teams.
The format is two-person shamble. The entry fee of $230 per team includes greens fee, prizes and luncheon.

10th annual Jingle Bell Beach Run
Hawaii Sport Events presents the 10th annual Jingle Bell Beach Run on Dec. 21.
The event will feature a 5K, 1 mile and Santa’s Keiki Dash runs starting at 7:30 a.m. in front of Coconut Grove Marketplace.
There will be awards for the top three finishers in each category: Overall, 10-year age groups, and best Christmas costumes.
Entry fee for the 5K is $30 till Nov. 30, $35 till Dec. 20, and $10 for the 1-mile till Dec. 20. The Keiki Dash is free to ages 6 and younger.

Hawaii Cycling Club time trial
The Hawaii Cycling Club will hold its Teams for the Holidays Time Trial on Dec. 6.
Registration is from 7 to 7:45 a.m. at Mauna Kea State Park, and the 40K race starts at 8.
The course on Saddle Road starts at the 34.5 mile marker, goes south, makes a U-turn at the 22 marker and returns to the 34.5 marker.
Members of other bicycle and triathlon clubs, bicycle store teams and training partners are encouraged to participate. Nonmembers and athletes of all abilities and ages are welcome. HCC membership is free.

County winter hoops tournament
The Hawaii Isle Police Activities League, in collaboration with the Department of Parks and Recreation, will hold its 34th annual “Winter Basketball Classic” tournament Dec. 26-29, at various sites in Hilo.
Entries are being accepted for age groups: 5-6, 7-8, boys 9-10, girls 10-under, boys 11-12, girls 12-under, boys 13-14, and girls 14-under. The age cutoff date is Dec. 31, 2014.
All championship games will be played Dec. 29 at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Registration for age group 8 and younger is $60 per team, for 9 and older is $80 per team, and for neighbor island teams, $25. Deadline for team entry is Nov. 28.
Registration forms can be picked up at all police stations or on the County of Hawaii’s Department of Parks and Recreation website.

Kayak fishing tournament
The P&P Kayaks “Pelagic Pursuit” fishing tournament will be held Nov. 22-23.
Prizes include two new Hobie “Quest” kayaks and gear. There will be an awards ceremony with food and beverages.
