HONOLULU — Honolulu police say they have discovered neither a suspect nor a motive in a stabbing that killed a popular newspaper seller on a city street.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports police continue to investigate the killing of 70-year-old Thaddeus “Ted” Pirga Jr.

Pirga was a retired welder who sold copies of the Sunday newspaper in front of Cafe Miro on Waialae Avenue in the Kaimuki neighborhood.

Homicide Lt. Walter Calistro says police took a call on the incident at 3:40 a.m. Sunday. Officers found Pirga on the sidewalk.

He was rushed at about 4 a.m. to a hospital in critical condition but he died.

Pirga had sold newspapers at the location since the late 1990s.

His father, Thaddeus Pirga Sr., had also sold newspapers there.
