Whenever an individual ignores a court summons or traffic citation, a bench warrant for failure to appear in court is issued for that person’s arrest. Although most people respond, some do not. Over time, this lack of response creates a sizable backlog causing law enforcement to seek out residents. Although the Hawaii County Police Department can make warrant arrests in public areas, at places of employment, or in front of family and friends, it prefers that residents report directly to them.

Over time, this lack of response creates a sizable backlog causing law enforcement to seek out residents. Although the Hawaii County Police Department can make warrant arrests in public areas, at places of employment, or in front of family and friends, it prefers that residents report directly to them.

The police department will submit a weekly list of outstanding warrants to the news media. Anyone recognizing a name on the list should notify that person and urge him or her to contact the police. This will enable law enforcement personnel to explain the warrant bail amount and speedup processing. A name appearing on the list does not mean that person is guilty of a crime, only that a judge has issued a warrant. It is also possible that a warrant on this list has already been served or may have been recalled. The list is accurate at the time it is compiled by police and the courts.
