HONOLULU — Hawaii’s Gov. Neil Abercrombie is releasing $59 million to the University of Hawaii for improvements at various campuses.
Abercrombie says the state must invest in campus infrastructure so that the university can fulfill its mission.
The schools will get a total of $50 million to deal with outstanding repair and maintenance issues. The UH system currently has a $402 million backlog of projects dealing with reroofing, renovations and updating mechanical and electrical systems.
Leeward Community College will get $8 million to renovate its theater. The structure hosts 100,000 patrons per year, but it hasn’t been renovated since its construction in 1974.
Kapiolani Community College will get $500,000 to renovate a wing of classrooms used by the nursing program.
