Girl Scouts seek items to mail to soldiers

Girl Scout troop 2028 is seeking donations that can be mailed to soldiers abroad as part of Operation: Christmas Stockings for Soldiers.

Recommended items to donate include AT&T phone cards, toiletries and snacks. Donations can be dropped off at Girl Scout booths from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Kona Walmart and from 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 22 at Keauhou Farmers Market. Items may also be placed in a collection box from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays in November at Keauhou Farmers Market at the Kona King Coffee booth.

Prize drawing to follow Waikoloa Walk/Run for Literacy

Tickets for the Friends of the Library Waikoloa prize drawing will be available from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Waikoloa school cafeteria following the fifth annual Walk/Run for Literacy. Winners will be announced at 12:30 p.m. and need not be present.

A design consultant has been selected for the library building and site selection negotiations are underway for land donated by Waikoloa Village Association.

Parkinson’s and neuroplasticity exercise class set

Individuals with Parkinson’s and other neurological challenges may attend an activity class, led by Madeline Sofranac, doctor and physical therapist at Mana Physical Therapy in Waimea. The class is from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday at Tutu’s House in Waimea.

This is an opportunity to engage both mind and body in specially designed exercises adapted to various ability levels. Dress comfortably to get the whole body involved. A 30-minute support group discussion will be included. For more information or to register, call Tutu’s House at 885-6777.

Fundraiser at Denny’s coincides with World Polio Day

The public may help eradicate polio by dining from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Denny’s in Kailua-Kona. All tips and 20 percent of food and drink sales will help Rotary Club of Kona fight polio.

Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary meets

The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary will hold its monthly board meeting at 1 p.m. Monday in the hospital conference room. Visitors are welcome. Also, the organization holds a bake sale from 7 to 9 a.m. every Friday in the hospital cafeteria.

Veterans Day ceremony planned at Pearl Harbor

As daylight fades Tuesday, the Battleship Missouri Memorial will bring all Veterans and Armistice Day observances around the world to a close with a sunset ceremony in Pearl Harbor.

“It is a special privilege to conclude our nation’s commemorations of Veterans Day here in historic Pearl Harbor on the decks of the USS Missouri, America’s last battleship,” said Michael Carr, president & CEO of the USS Missouri Memorial Association.

Rear Admiral Richard “Rick” L. Williams, commander of Navy Region Hawaii and the Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, will deliver the keynote address. As the ceremony draws to a close, a vintage World War II airplane will perform a flyover of the retired USS Missouri.

The ceremony is free and open to the public. A complimentary shuttle will be provided from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Caregiving tips offered at library in Kailua-Kona

The Kailua-Kona Public Library will host gerontologist Laura Guluzzy at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15. Guluzzy will offer tips for caregivers and give a presentation about her book, “Inside Grammie’s Closet,” which includes a 21-tip guide for caregivers. A question and answer session will follow.

Sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona, this program is free.

Brain injury support group meets

The Kona Brain Injury Support group meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 at Hawaiian Rehab Services mauka of Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union on Hualalai Street.

Naturopathic physician AnneMarie Lambert will give a talk titled, “Naturopathic Medicine: Evaluation and Treatment for Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury.”

HPA Book club meets Wednesday

The Hawaii Preparatory Academy Community Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Dyer Memorial Library, Upper Campus. “A Tale for the Time Being” by Ruth Ozeki will be discussed. Club meetings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and participants are invited to bring a snack to share.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 15. The book selection will be “The Lowland” by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Low-interest federal disaster loans available

Low-interest federal disaster loans are available to private, nonprofit organizations in Hawaii County, following President Obama’s federal disaster declaration for public assistance as a result of Tropical Storm Iselle. Private nonprofits providing essential services of a governmental nature are eligible for assistance.

The filing deadline to return applications for property damage is Wednesday. The deadline to return economic injury applications is June 12, 2015.

Suicide intervention skills training offered

Applied suicide intervention skills training will be offered from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday in the West Hawaii Civic Center Community Hale, Building G. Attendees will learn how to recognize, assess and support a person in crisis. The class will help caregivers discuss suicide and intervene. There is no cost for training and materials, no food is provided. The class is sponsored by State Department of Health.
