Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Oct. 20 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were under the age of 21, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

So far this year, there have been 944 DUI arrests, compared with 1,063 during the same period in 2013.

Kona and South Hilo officers arrested five motorists in each district while South Kohala officers arrested four. Three drivers were arrested by officers in the Puna district.

There have been 1,282 major accidents in 2014, compared with 1,116 during the same period last year.

So far this year, there have been 10 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island, compared with 23 during the same period in 2013.

To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and three were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol. DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
