Lecture focuses on Amy Greenwell
October’s Hanohano O Kona lecture will highlight “Amy Greenwell and Her Garden: Native Hawaiian Plants and Their Preservation” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center.
Greenwell was a member of a well-known Kailua-Kona family and her legacy to the community is a significant garden that preserves the plants of old Kona. This presentation tells her story and the story of the native plants and archaeology to which she was so dedicated. Presenting her story is Peter Van Dyke who came to the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden as the propagator in the native plant nursery. He has been garden manager since 1993 and has degrees in anthropology and education.
Presented by Kona Historical Society, in cooperation with Hawaii County, this lecture series is a gift from the society to the community that has supported it for so long. Free of charge, it is open to all. For more information, call 323-3222 or visit konahistorical.org.
