HONOLULU — A former middle school security guard who pleaded guilty to having sex with a 14-year-old student has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

KHON-TV reports Anthony Romualdo pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault and was sentenced Wednesday.

Romualdo was 20 when he worked at Kailua Intermediate School, which has seventh and eighth-grade students.

The Department of Education last year said he was a temporary hire who was fired after he sent text messages to students.

The girl’s family learned she had been sexually assaulted when she was more than five months pregnant. Romualdo was arrested in July 2013.

Deputy prosecutor Kristen Yamamoto sought a 20-year prison term.

The sentencing judge granted a defense request for consideration of Romualdo as a youthful offender.
