Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for alleged driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Oct. 13 and Sunday. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 927 DUI arrests compared with 1,045 during the same period in 2013, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
In their districts, North Hilo officers arrested one driver, South Hilo officers arrested five drivers, Puna officers arrested two drivers 2, Ka’u officers arrested one driver, Kona officers arrested six drivers, and South Kohala officers arrested three drivers.
So far this year, Kona officers have arrested the most drivers at 337 followed by Hilo officers with 300 and Puna officers with 145. South Kohala officers have arrested 104, Ka’u officers 21, Hamakua officers nine, North Kohala officers seven, and North Hilo officers four.
There have been 1,244 major accidents so far this year, compared with 1,101 during the same period in 2013. So far this year, there have been 10 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island, compared with 23 during the same period in 2013. To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and three fatalities were related to a combination of alcohol and drugs, police said.
