The Mauna Kea Access Road remains closed Tuesday because of damage caused by Hurricane Ana this weekend.

Storm runoff caused by the storm resulted in extensive erosion and damage to the unpaved portion of the road above the Visitor Information Station, the Mauna Kea Weather Center reports. The Visitor Information Station is located some 9,000 feet above sea level.

Road repairs are underway. The center hopes to reopen the road Tuesday evening, however, officials cautioned it is unknown when the road may reopen.
