White cane walk slated Sunday

“Walk a Course in Our Slippas” is the theme for the annual White Cane Awareness Walk, hosted by the National Federation of the Blind West Hawaii Chapter. For this year’s event, the Kailua-Kona Lions Club is constructing an obstacle course at Hale Halawai for the public to negotiate while blindfolded.

Statewide, the Department of Human Services Vocational Rehabilitation Division’s Hoopono Services for the Blind is organizing such walks, which demonstrate the importance of the white cane to blind and visually impaired members of the community. The white cane empowers blind and visually impaired individuals with independence, freedom and confidence.

The Kailua-Kona event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Participants should meet between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at Hale Halawai to get a T-shirt. A shuttle will be available for those needing a ride to the starting point. The walk begins at 1 p.m. at Kailua Pier and proceeds south on Alii Drive through the Kailua Village Stroll to Hale Halawai. The obstacle course is open from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Along with the obstacle course at Hale Halawai, there will also be information tables.

For more information, call Sally Hammond, president of National Federation of the Blind West Hawaii Chapter, at 345-7065.
