HONOLULU — Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie has proclaimed an emergency to help the state respond to the approach of Tropical Storm Ana.
HONOLULU — Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie has proclaimed an emergency to help the state respond to the approach of Tropical Storm Ana.
The emergency proclamation allows the state to more easily access state and federal emergency resources and quickly respond to any storm effects.
The proclamation takes effect Wednesday and continues through Oct. 24.
Tropical Storm Ana was forecast to become a hurricane Wednesday as it moved northwest toward the Hawaiian Islands. The Big Island’s southeastern shores could experience heavy rains and high surf by Friday afternoon.
In anticipation of Ana gaining strength, the state Department of Education is closing all public schools on the Big Island Friday.
Ana is expected to make its closest approach to the islands this weekend.
