HONOLULU — University of Hawaii running back Joey Iosefa has been suspended for the team’s next three games after his arrest early Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence.

HONOLULU — University of Hawaii running back Joey Iosefa has been suspended for the team’s next three games after his arrest early Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence.

“He is contrite, embarrassed, and remorseful for his actions,” head coach Norm Chow said in a university statement. “We have a set of core values and obviously he did not abide by them.”

Iosefa was suspended immediately and stripped of his team captaincy after a meeting with Chow and Athletic Director Ben Jay on Tuesday.

“I apologize to my coaches and teammates, to my family, to the university and to our fans,” Iosefa said. “I will accept the consequences coach Chow has laid out and hope to regain the trust of my coaches, teammates and the fans.”

Iosefa missed the past four games because of a foot injury. He was slated to return for this Saturday’s game at San Diego State. He will be reinstated for the Nov. 8 game at Colorado State.

According to police records, the 23-year-old Iosefa was taken into custody about 5 a.m. Sunday near downtown Honolulu. He was released after posting $500 bail. A court date is scheduled for Nov. 10.
