A magnitude-4.0 earthquake was recorded Sunday evening just north of Naalehu in Kaʻu, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The earthquake hit at 6:43 p.m.. and was centered about 7 miles north of Naalehu, according to the USGS. The temblor’s registered depth was 3.4 miles.
According to the USGS, the earthquake was felt by residents in Hilo, Pahala and Naalehu, as well as at Hickam Air Force Base on Oahu. A total of 26 people reported feeling the earthquake.
Only weak shaking was reported around the epicenter. At these shaking intensities, damage to buildings or structures was not expected. No aftershocks of the magnitude-4.0 earthquake were recorded as of 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
Over the past 50 years, the area north of Naalehu has experienced eight earthquakes, including Sunday’s event, with magnitudes greater than 4.0 and at depths of zero to 6.2 miles.
The earthquake caused no detectable changes in Kilauea Volcano’s ongoing eruption or on Mauna Loa and other active volcanoes on the Island of Hawaii, according to the USGS.
