A Hilo man is in custody after being charged with offenses in connection with a confrontation early Tuesday.
South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a 2:50 a.m. report of an affray in progress on Mohouli Street in Hilo.
A 43-year-old man reported he had been jumped by six or seven males in the driveway of his home and that he was punched and kicked repeatedly, causing him to fall to the ground, where he sustained injuries to his head, knees and feet, according to the Hawaii Police Department. The assailants then fled the area on foot. A few minutes later, police were able to locate the suspects hiding in the back of a church.
Police arrested 20-year-old Beliver Engilo, three male juveniles and another Hilo man.
The juveniles were released to the custody of their parents.
The adults were taken to the Hilo Police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.
At 8:59 a.m. Wednesday, detectives charged Engilo with second-degree assault. His bail was set at $10,000. He remains at the cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Thursday.
Engilo was also arrested on a bench warrant for a grand jury indictment on charges of kidnapping, terroristic threatening, unlawful imprisonment, endangering the welfare of a minor and two counts of abuse of a family/household member. His bail on those offenses was $17,000.
At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, the other suspect was released pending further investigation.
