HONOLULU — A Hawaii educator will serve on a national board overseeing student assessment.

Kaimuki Middle School Principal Frank Fernandes is one of five educators appointed Tuesday to the National Assessment Governing Board.

The appointees will help set policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Also called the “nation’s report card,” the assessment helps provide policymakers and the public with information about student performance.

The state Department of Education says Fernandes becomes the first principal from Hawaii to serve on the board. He became Kaimuki Middle School’s principal in 1986, making him the longest-serving principal at a Hawaii public school.

The others on the board are a California fourth-grade teacher, a Massachusetts school chief, an Alabama eighth-grade teacher and a Michigan science center president. Their terms end in 2018.
