SAT test is Saturday

The SAT test will be administered Saturday in the Kealakehe High School cafeteria. Students may have to find alternate routes to the school because of the Ironman World Championship.

Students should arrive by 7:50 a.m. for check-in and must have a photo ID and their admission. They may bring water and a snack, an approved calculator, and No. 2 pencils. The test will end around 1 p.m.

Applications accepted for subsidized preschool program

The state Department of Human Services is accepting applications for its 2014-15 Preschool Open Doors program. Applications received by Oct. 31 will be considered for participation from Jan. 1 through June 30, 2015.

The statewide child care program provides subsidies to eligible low- and moderate-income families to pay tuition at any of the state’s licensed 428 preschools. A child must be 5 years old on or before July 31, 2014, to enter kindergarten. Underserved or at-risk children born between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009, will receive priority consideration for the 2014-15 program.

Presenters sought for Galaxy Forum

The International Lunar Observatory Association is looking for an area teacher or student who is doing innovative work to advance galaxy science education to be a presenter at Galaxy Forum.

The event will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at Anna Ranch in Waimea. The forum will include extensive updates on astronomy and astronautical research and educational activities underway on the island.

Shimamoto named to president’s list

Kailua-Kona resident Ashley Shimamoto, a sophomore at Bryan College of Health Sciences, made the president’s list for the spring semester. The president’s list is composed of students who were taking 10 credit hours or more and received a 4.0 grade point average.

Shimamoto is the daughter of Michael and Michele Shimamoto of Puu Lani Ranch.

Three Parker seniors are commended

Parker School seniors Brian Bollinger, Luke Potter and Maia Tarnas have been named Commended Students in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, has been given to each of these scholastically talented students.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2015 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
