Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for alleged driving under the influence of an intoxicant from Sept. 29 through Sunday.

Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for alleged driving under the influence of an intoxicant from Sept. 29 through Sunday.

Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than 21, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

So far this year, there have been 891 DUI arrests, compared with 996 during the same period in 2013.

South Hilo officers arresed a dozen drivers while Kona officers arrested eight and Puna officers five. South Kohala, Kaʻu and Hamakua officers arrested one motorist in each district.

There have been 1,180 major accidents in 2014, compared with 1,059 during the same period last year.

This year, there have been nine traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island, compared with 23 during the same period in 2013.

To date, police said three fatalities were related to drugs and three fatalities were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
