Cristian Ruelas scored in the fourth minute for the Vulcans (3-5-1, 1-3 PacWest), who ended a three-game losing streak.

“We were more aggressive and intense than we have been,” UH-Hilo director of soccer Lance Thompson said. “The guys have bought into the changes we’ve made, and it’s great to get the result of the hard work they’ve put in the last couple of days.”

The Sea Lions (0-7-1, 0-3) got a goal from Joshua Eusebio in the 41st minute.

Erik Lund and Mike Reckmeter garnered assists for the Vulcans, who held an 8-4 advantage in shots.

Point Loma women 2, UH-Hilo 1, 2OT: Morgan Pearce’s goal in the second overtime ended the Lady Vulcans’ seven-match unbeaten streak.

Ashley Borja-Roese scored with just more than 10 minutes remaining in regulation as UH-Hilo (5-2-2, 2-1-1) tied the match at 1. Taylor Wright drew an assist.

Natalie Swift opened the scoring in the 14th minute for the Sea Lions (4-2, 3-0).

There were only seven shots in the game, three by the Vulcans, who are 0-2 at home this season.

Volleyball

Kyndra Trevino-Scott posted 17 kills on .371 hitting, but the University of Hawaii at Hilo lost a five-setter, 21-25, 28-26, 23-25, 25-22, 16-14 against Fresno Pacific, falling to 1-4 on its trip.

“The best we’ve played all season, ” coach Tino Reyes said. “I was proud of how the girls played. If we play like this more often, we’ll like the result.”

Reyes said outside hitter Marley Strand-Nicolaisen did not play because of injury.

Callie Aberle compiled 14 kills for UH-Hilo (4-6, 3-4 PacWest) and Shelby Harguess had 12.

The Sunbirds (9-6, 3-3) were paced by Morghan Williams’ 20 kills.
