Cake and coffee fundraiser to benefit the Pregnancy Center

The Pregnancy Center will host the Baby Cakes &Coffee Exhibit beginning at 7 a.m. Friday on the front lawn of Mokuaikaua Church.

Cake slices will be sold for $3 each. Available cakes are listed on bojoscreations.com and include German chocolate, angel food cake and carrot cake. Kona coffee will be served hot or iced. The treats will be sold to raise funds to provide no-cost pregnancy screening and ultrasounds and childbirth and parenting classes at the Pregnancy Center.

Society for Hawaiian Archaeology holds conference in Hilo

The Society for Hawaiian Archaeology will present its annual Archaeology Week Conference Friday through Sunday in Hilo.

Events include a tour of Laupahoehoe area historical sites in north Hilo, an open house at the Department of Land and Natural Resources State Historical Preservation Division branch in Hilo, a trail hike at historic Kaawaloa, an identification workshop on the Ala Kahakai trail and a tour along the Keaukaha coastline and Waiakea Ahupuaa. Activities are also planned on Oahu, Lanai and Kauai.

Candidate forum focuses on family values

A candidate forum has been scheduled for State House District 5 and 6 from 3 to 5 p.m Sunday at Kona Faith Center in Captain Cook.

All candidates have been invited. The forum will cover family values issues. The free event is open to the public.

Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary meets

The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary will hold its monthly board meeting at 1 p.m. Oct. 13 in the hospital conference room. Visitors are welcome.

Lyman Museum holds talk, book signing

Lyman Museum will host a special talk and book signing with archaeologist and author Patrick Kirch from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 13.

The presentation describes the land and early inhabitants of Kahikinui on the southeastern slopes of Maui’s Haleakala. Kahikinui remains one of the last places in the Hawaiian Islands where the landscape of an entire district is preserved intact. Kirch’s book, “Kua aina Kahiko: Life and Land in Ancient Kahikinui, Maui,” will be available for purchase.

Church founder to speak in Waimea

The Rev. Suliaski Kurulo from Fiji will speak at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 Mana Christian Ohana, which meets in Kahilu Town Hall in Waimea.

Kurulo has established about 3,000 churches in more than 100 countries. The event is free; donations will be accepted.

Tickets on sale for Taste of Hilo

The 16th annual Taste of Hilo will feature the creative work of restaurants, chefs, dessert patisseries and beverage distributors at 3 p.m. Oct. 19 at Sangha Hall. The event will include locally raised, range-fed beef from Hawaii Beef Producers. Organizers expect the event to sell out and recommend purchasing tickets early.

Tickets are $45 presale and $65 at the door, subject to availability. Tickets may be ordered by calling the Japanese Chamber of Commerce office at 934-0177 or by emailing the office at jccih@jccih.org. A portion of event proceeds will benefit Hawaii Community College.

County Board of Ethics meets

The County of Hawaii Board of Ethics will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 in Room 1501 of the Hawaii County Building at 25 Aupuni St. in Hilo.

Community forum schedule announced

Community Enterprises Inc. has announced this year’s schedule for West Hawaii community forums. Most programs are held at 6 p.m. Thursday unless otherwise noted, and are in the Makaeo Events Pavilion at Old Kona Airport Park.

At 6:30 p.m. Oct. 15, Wes Thelen, Hawaii Volcano Observatory seismologist, will discuss large earthquakes in Hawaii.

The 6 p.m. Oct. 16 meeting will focus on Hawaii County real property taxation with Stan Sitko, Hawaii County real property tax administrator, Margaret Wille, County Council member and Real Property Taxation Task Force member.

The 6 p.m. Nov. 18 meeting will cover Hawaii State Department of Transportation projects in West Hawaii with Ford Fuchigama, Department of Transportation administrator.

At the 6 p.m. Dec. 11 meeting, presession Legislative issues will be discussed.
