PROVO, Utah — Backup quarterback Darell Garretson threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns, leading Utah State to a 35-20 upset of No. 18 Brigham Young on Friday night.
BYU quarterback Taysom Hill, a Heisman Trophy hopeful, broke his left leg late in the first half and is likely done for the season. Without him, the Cougars (4-1) never recovered from a 14-point halftime deficit on a night when former star quarterback Jim McMahon had his No. 9 jersey retired.
Garretson, a sophomore who took over for injured Chuckie Keeton in the second half of a Week 3 win over Wake Forest, also ran for a score. He completed 14 of 17 passes for 257 yards and three TDs in the first half, propelling Utah State to a 28-14 lead.
Hunter Sharp had five catches for 173 yards and a touchdown for the Aggies, who were 20-point underdogs. Devonte Robinson had six catches for 98 yards and two TDs.
McMahon is the sixth former BYU football player to have his number retired, following Eldon Fortie, Marion Probert, Steve Young, Gifford Nielsen and Ty Detmer.
Fresno State 24, San Diego State 13
FRESNO, Calif. — Donovan Lewis and Jamal Ellis intercepted consecutive fourth-quarter passes and Fresno State pulled away to beat San Diego State on Friday night in “The Battle For The Oil Can” game.
Lewis corralled freshman Nick Bawden’s errant pass at the Fresno State 28 with 6:15 left after a series of deflections. After San Diego State forced a punt, Ellis intercepted Bawden’s next pass and returned it 5 yards to the 7 to set up Marteze Waller’s clinching 5-yard touchdown run.
Fresno State (3-3, 2-0 Mountain West) won its third straight game after opening with losses to Southern California, Utah and Nebraska. The game was the 1,000th in program history, with the Bulldogs improving to 580-393-27. They are 23-27-4 in the rivalry series against San Diego State (2-3, 1-1).
San Diego State cut it to 17-13 on Bawden’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Adam Roberts with 10:20 left. Bawden made his first start after Quinn Kaehler sprained his right shoulder last week in a victory over UNLV.
