HONOLULU — About 9,500 gallons of untreated wastewater was dumped into the Mokapu Central Drainage Channel at Marine Corps Base Hawaii but did not reach ocean waters.

KHON-TV reports the spill occurred between 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The untreated wastewater entered the channel near Lawrence Road and Pancoast Place.

The spill was blamed on a malfunctioning sewage lift station pump.

Officials say the spill was contained on the base.

The sewage lift station pump has been repaired.

Officials say grounds and surface streets were cleaned and disinfected but remediation efforts continue.
