Last call for voter registration
The last day to register to vote in the General Election is Monday. To be eligible to vote, one must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Hawaii and at least 18 years old.
Registered voters who have changed their name or moved since the last election should re-register. Voter registration forms are available at post offices, public libraries, in the Yellow Pages, on the Office of Elections website at hawaii.gov/elections, at county clerk’s offices and at most state agencies.
Completed voter registration forms must be turned in to the appropriate county clerk by 4:30 p.m. or postmarked by Monday if mailed. The election is Nov. 4.

West Hawaii Hui Laulima meets Friday
West Hawaii Hui Laulima will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday at the West Hawaii Community Health Center meeting room.
K. Martin Fletcher, director Hawaii Community College West Hawaii Center will provide an update on the new campus at Palamanui. Pablo Penaloza, founder and president of Alakai Academy Child Development Center will share the preschool’s philosophy.

Orchid Society meets Friday
Kona Orchid Society will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Friday in the Bridge Building of Makua Lani School, 74-4966 Kealakaa St.
Ben Oliveros will speak on the care of Cattleyas. Attendees may bring their troubled Cattleyas to obtain help. A potluck dinner will be held at 6:15 p.m

Conference will address increasing local food in schools
Re-growing community food systems is the theme of an upcoming conference that will address increasing the supply, distribution and procurement of locally grown food for Hawaii’s schools.
Presented by the Hawaii Farm to School and School Garden Hui and The Kohala Center, the Hawaii Farm to School Conference will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday at Kamehameha Schools’ Kapalama Campus in Honolulu. Dog show is this weekend in Hilo
The Kona Coast Kennel Club and the Orchid Island Dog Fancier Club will host an AKC all-breed conformation dog show Saturday and Sunday at Edith Kanakaole Stadium in Hilo.
In recent years, more than 150 dogs representing 50 breeds have entered this event – all competing for the“Best In Show” title. The event is open to the public with no admission fee from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Kohala Country Fair is Saturday
The Kohala Country Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
For its 30th anniversary, the fair welcomes Na Hoku Hanohano award winner Robi Kahakalau, Kohala’s own North Shore Live, Hilo’s Keawe Trio and Lorenzo’s Army. Additional entertianment includes hula by Na Kupuna O Kohala, West African dance by LavaRoots and the HICCUP Children’s Circus. The event will feature about 100 food and craft booths and keiki activities.
Admission is free and there is ample parking at the fairgrounds 1 mile east of Kapaau, across from Iole Road. Donations are accepted.

Class focuses on peace
Catherine Ishida and the Unitarian Universalists of West Hawaii will present a class that focuses on peace from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 7, 21, Nov. 4 and 18 at a private home in Kailua-Kona.
