During the week of Sept. 15 through Sept. 21, Hawaii Island police arrested 11 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. So far this year, there have been 842 DUI arrests compared with 935 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.9 percent. There have been 1,131 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,004 during the same period last year, an increase of 12.6 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.1 percent.

To date, six fatalities were related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
