During the week of Sept. 8 through Sunday, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

During the week of Sept. 8 through Sunday, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 831 DUI arrests compared with 896 during the same period last year, a 7.3 percent decrease.

There have been 1,097 major accidents so far this year compared with 970 during the same period last year, a 13.1 percent increase.

So far this year, there have been nine traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 21 during the same period last year, a 57.1 percent decline.

To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and three to a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
