Richard Ortega

Richard John Ortega, 59, of Laupahoehoe died Sept. 10, 2014, at his residence. Born Jan. 7, 1955, in Frankfurt, Germany, he was an art collector.

He is survived by brothers, Nelson Ortega of Hope Mills, N.C., Raymond Ortega of Fayetteville, N.C.; sister, Mary Ortega Williams of Statesville, N.C.; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Michael Pilapil

Michael Avelino Pilapil, 70, of Kailua-Kona died Sept. 8, 2014, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Aug. 3, 1944, in Waialua, Oahu, he was a pastor for Kona Community Assembly of God Church, visiting minister at Kona Community Hospital and member of the Filipino Honor Society, Assembly of God Men’s Fellowship and Minister’s Association of Kona.

Friends may call at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 at Calvary Church in Kailua-Kona for a 7 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 9 a.m. Sept. 19 at the church for a 10 a.m. service. Burial will be at Kona Memorial Park in Holualoa. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Arlene Pilapil of Kailua-Kona; daughters, Armi Pilapil and Carrie Pilapil, both of Kailua-Kona; son, Lemuel Pilapil of Oahu; sisters, Erline DeLeon of Kailua-Kona, Lenora (Gulfan) Dalapu of Arizona, Elizabeth (Antonio) Nioso and Carmen Abear, all of California; brothers, Stanley (Edna) Pilapil of California, Lawrence (Elvie) Pilapil of Kailua-Kona; three grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Barbara Smith-Kapela

Barbara Jean Smith-Kapela, 77, of Captain Cook died Aug. 21, 2014, at her residence. Born March 14, 1937, in Glendale, Calif., she was a legal secretary and paralegal for Jewell and Krueger Law Offices.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. Sept. 20 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Keei Ward for a 10 a.m. service. Burial is at Kona Memorial Park in Holualoa. Luncheon and fellowship follow at Yano Hall in Captain Cook. Family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.

She is survived by husband, Paul Kapela of Captain Cook; son, Kimo (Casey) Kapela of Kealakekua; daughter, Keahi Kapela of Captain Cook; stepson, Todd (Jenna) Kapela of Honolulu; sister, Joan Johnson of Honolulu; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; numerous cousins.

Patricia Ushiroda

Patricia “Pat” Elizabeth Ushiroda, 69, of Kailua-Kona died Sept. 2, 2014, at KonaCommunityHospital. Born Nov. 13, 1944, in Pepeekeo, she was a clerk for the Hawaii County Finance Department Real Property Tax Division, a former engineering clerk for Kona Surf Resort, front desk clerk for Kona Inn Resort and member of St. Michael’s ArchangelChurch, ILWU Local 142 and Akitsu Kumiai.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. Sept. 20 at St. Michael’s Archangel Church located at the Honokohau Industrial Park for a 10 a.m. Mass. Family requests casual attire be worn. Luncheon follows at Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club at Honokohau Boat Harbor.

She is survived by husband, Randall Ushiroda of Kailua-Kona; mother, Mary Patao of Honomu; sons, Lawrence (Jaye) Debina of Mililani, Oahu, Darin (Cori) Debina of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Angela Debina of Kailua-Kona; brothers, Frank (Barbara) Quirit of Kaneohe, Oahu, James (Maura) Patao of Kailua-Kona, Lawrence (Annette) Patao of Pepeekeo, Rodney Patao of Orlando, Fla.; sisters, Sally Fukunaga of Ocean View, Caroline Patao of Honomu, Frances (Larry) Caceres of Hilo; stepsons, Chad Ushiroda of Punene, Maui, Kurt (Doll) Ushiroda of Kailua-Kona, Sean Ushiroda of Las Vegas; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Geneva Rich

Geneva Eileen Rich, 90, of Kailua-Kona died Sept. 9, 2014, at her residence. Born June 11, 1924, in Wilson, Okla., she was a retired school district secretary and World War II Navy veteran.

No services are planned.

She is survived by son, James (Margaret) Pierce of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Kathryn (Chris) Bumpus of Mayville, Wis.; sister, Maxine Merry of Fillmore, Calif.; brother, J.C. Taylor of Long Beach, Calif.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
