Big Island police have charged a 23-year-old Kailua-Kona man in connection with a burglary in Kona.
Early Tuesday morning patrol officers responded to a report of an in-progress burglary at a condominium complex located at the 5800 block of Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona. The resident manager of the complex reported hearing noises coming from its locked laundry facility, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Responding officers arriving at the condominium complex observed a man carrying a backpack fleeing from the laundry facility. After a short foot pursuit officers apprehended and arrested Ian Medeiros of Kailua-Kona. Officers at the scene determined the laundry facility had been forcibly entered and that laundry equipment within the facility had been damaged and coins removed from locked containers.
Medeiros was taken to the Kona police cellblock while Area II Criminal Investigations Section detectives continued the investigation into the burglary.
This morning, detectives charged Medeiros with burglary, criminal property damage, theft, possession of burglary tools, resisting arrest, methamphetamine trafficking, and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail was set at $64,000. He is being held at the Kona police cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Thursday.
