Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant from Aug. 25 through Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.

Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant from Aug. 25 through Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 793 DUI arrests compared with 851 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.8 percent.

There have been 1,044 major accidents so far this year compared with 915 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.1 percent, and nine fatalities compared with 21 last year, a decrease of 57.1 percent. To date, six fatalities were related to drugs and three were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
