Waimea offers volleyball league

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, will accept registrations for age-group volleyball season beginning at 3 p.m. Sept. 9-11, during clinic days at Thelma Parker Gym.

Clinics begin at 3:30 p.m. for ages 9-10, 4:30 ages 11-12 and 13-14.

The league runs from Oct. 14 to Nov. 19, Tuesdays and Thursdays in October; Mondays and Wednesdays in November. The games start at 4:30 p.m. at various gyms.

Fees are $10 payable to Waimea Athletics. Volunteer coaches are needed.

Brantley Center to host races

The Brantley Center will host its third annual Honokaa 5K, half-marathon and 30K Waipio Challenge on Oct. 18.

Races start at 6:30 a.m. at the Honokaa Sports Complex.

Registration fees are $30 for the 5K, $65 for the half-marathon and $75 for the 30K. Prices will increase Aug. 31. The fee includes entertainment, refreshments, aid stations on the course, finisher medals for the half-marathon and 30K finishers and T-shirts for all participants. There will also be age-group awards.

Rodeo action at Parker Ranch

The 40th annual Parker Ranch Round-Up Club Rodeo will be Saturday and Sunday at the Parker Ranch Rodeo Arena in Waimea.

The event is a fundraiser to provide scholarships for children of Parker Ranch employees.

Rodeo action starts at noon both days, featuring events such as team roping, double mugging and bull riding. On Sunday, the Round-Up Club, in partnership with Parker Ranch, will host a live horse auction; registration starts at 9 a.m.

There will be vendors, food and refreshments, with events until 5 p.m.

Tickets are $7 per person in advance from the Parker Ranch Store at the Parker Ranch Center and at Parker Ranch headquarters in Waimea, or $8 at the gate. Children 12 and younger are admitted free. For more information, call 885-7311.

Fishing tournament a benefit for veterans

The Veterans Helping Veterans fishing tournament is slated Friday and Saturday.

Registration, food and a silent auction will be 5-7:30 p.m. Friday, at the Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club clubhouse. Fishing starts at 7 a.m. Saturday, and the banquet follows at 6 p.m.

The entry fee is $300 per boat/team of four anglers and two crew. A portion of the fees plus all of the silent auction proceeds will go to the Kona Posts of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Fitness paddleboard, canoe race

Mauna Lani Bay Hotels and Bungalows presents its fourth annual Hulakai and Da Hui Race to Fitness series beginning Sept. 27.

The 7.2-mile race starts from Kiholo Bay and finishes at Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. Top three finishers receive prizes.

The race is open to SUP’s and OC paddlers of all ages and skill levels.

Senior softball fall league

The senior slowpitch softball fall league will begin Sept. 7. Games start at 10 a.m. at Old Kona Airport Park.

Waimea offers instructional tennis

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, is holding sign-ups for instructional tennis at Waimea Park.

The free clinics are instructed by tennis pro Jeff Lewis, director of Rutgers Tennis Center at Hawaii Preparatory Academy. Clinics will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursdays through Sept. 18. The program is limited to the first 12 participants in two divisions offered: ages 6-9 and 10 and older.

Waikoloa Beach Resort offers “family golf days” during August.

HCC Time Trial

The Hawaii Cycling Club’s 22.2-mile “Out n Back Training Time Trial” takes place at 8 a.m. Sept. 20. The course starts at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery, heads north on Highway 19, makes a U-turn at Waikoloa Beach Road and ends with a sprint to the finish line at mile marker 85. Registration is at the cemetery from 7-7:40 a.m.

HPA to host fun run/dog walk benefit

Hawaii Preparatory Academy invites runners, walkers, friendly canines and families to participate in the fourth Bieni 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk at 9 a.m. Sept. 28 on the school’s cross-country course.

Bieni Kohler-Johnson, who graduated from HPA in 1983, died in June 2009 after a battle with breast cancer.

Net proceeds from the event will fund the annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson ’83 Scholarship at HPA. Registration and pledges are available online at flpregister.com/102.

The top fundraiser will receive the grand prize of a two-night stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The runner-up will receive a round of golf for four at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Fundraisers do not need to be present to win. Entry fee is $25 for adults, $10 for students 10 and under, with a late fee of an additional $10 after Sept. 9. All preregistered participants are guaranteed a shirt and goodie bag.

HI-PAL hoops sign-ups

HI-PAL is seeking teams interested in playing in “Click It or Ticket” 5-on-5 basketball tournament Sept. 12-14 at Waiakea Uka Gym.

Teams are in the 9-10 and 11-12 divisions.

Deadline to submit completed forms is Sept. 1. The age cut-off Dec. 31, 2014. Players are allowed to play on one team per division.

All HI-PAL roster, waiver and seat belt forms are required for participation.
