Generosity toward Puna heartwarming

Generosity toward Puna heartwarming

I extend deep gratitude to our Kona community members who have shared their generous kokua for our residents in Puna, that have been slammed by the fury of Iselle.

Although Kona has been spared, the feelings of blessings abound when people reach beyond themselves to go and help those in need. I would like to personally say mahalo to Mehana Kihoi and all of her friends that have been on a mission to get donations, purchase much-needed supplies, drive them to Puna and personally deliver them to the people in need, alongside the volunteers in the community. She has been there several times since the storm hit.

Last week, when I came home, my garage was filled with “Choice Mart” bags, filled with supplies. Also, Living Stones Church donated their 16-passenger van to deliver the goods. The next morning, with a fully loaded van and two cars stuffed with supplies, we drove to Puna. We picked up food for the volunteers, and made our way into the zone. There, I saw fallen trees, road blocks and electric wires tangled on the ground. We dropped our parcels at Nanawale Community Center. The community was in awe of the supplies that kept coming out of our vehicles. I was taken by the experience of deep appreciation for coming together for the good of all.

She and her friends continue to go to Puna, there is still much to do. If you see them with their signs, please Kokua Puna, deep inside you will appreciate that you did. I did.

Puna Kihoi (a proud mother)
