Hawaii Island police arrested 26 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Aug. 18 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were younger than 21.

Hawaii Island police arrested 26 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Aug. 18 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 772 DUI arrests compared with 817 during the same period last year, a 5.5 percent decrease, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested a dozen motorists, Kona officers arrested seven and South Kohala officers arrested six, according to police. Puna officers arrested one driver in the district.

There have been 1,014 major accidents so far this year compared with 891 during the same period last year, a 13.8 percent increase. There have also been nine traffic fatalities on the island compared with 21 during the same period last year, a 57.1 percent decrease.

To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and three fatalities were related to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
