Best of show was a traditional Cho Dansu cabinet by Correy Smith made from curly koa with drawer sides of Silver Oak and drawer bottoms of fragrant Port Orford cedar, finished with 10 coats of hand-rubbed German shellac.
First place for joinery is a fabulous hall table called “Uprising from the Caldera” made by Marcus Castaing, with curly Robusta eucalyptus, accented with kolohala and wenge trim.
First place for turning is an intricately designed piece made by Michael Patrick Smith titled “Temple Garden”, featuring a Cook pine bowl with intricate pyrography and a wooden base holding up the bowl by two faux bamboo sticks that run through the piece and hold the turned element aloft.
First place for sculpture is a sweeping, flowing and realistic design of a koa Hawaiian green sea turtle by Craig Nichols, titled “Ocean Voyager.”
First place for the open category is “Bow and Arrows,” a take-down, recurve, traditional bow made by David Weaver, with hand-crafted arrows arranged in a fan-like wall mounting. The bow and wall mounting is made from koa.
The gallery is awaiting delivery of several pieces purchased during the show before the amount raised for Kohala Watershed Partnership can be totaled.
